One of the main areas of focus for Xcel University is to promote mental health awareness, encourage conversation about mental health conditions, and advocate for access to quality mental health services for all.
People with mental health conditions - including depression, alcohol and drug abuse problems, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and child and adolescent mental health problems - are often overlooked by society. They can be neglected, excluded from educational and employment opportunities, and may not have access to quality care. Not addressing the health and developmental needs of this group of people negatively affects the well-being and economic prosperity of these individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. In the United States, these people end up homeless, in jails, or otherwise live lives in which they aren't living up to their full potential. Many experience premature deaths.
Xcel University aims to bring public attention to the importance of mental health awareness, emphasize the benefits of accurate mental health diagnosis and care, and fundraise for nonprofit mental health organizations and public awareness campaigns. We believe that good mental health is crucial to advance the well-being of individuals, families, and society as a whole.
If you live in the United States and need help or services, please visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's website for information. They have a wonderful referral and treatment locator service, which can be found here: http://www.samhsa.gov/treatment/index.aspx or by calling 1-800-662-HELP (4357)
