A shortage of state psychiatric beds is straining Connecticut’s mental-health system, many hospital executives say.

At Danbury and New Milford Hospitals, patients on average wait up to 100 days before getting a spot in a state treatment center—up from 30 to 40 days five years ago, said Charles Herrick, chairman of psychiatry for the hospitals.
